In the absence of legislative guidance on Covid-19 vaccine requirements, Ontario businesses are stepping up. As more and more companies enact their own policies requiring proof of vaccination for customers and workers, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce published its “Vax-Pass Tenets” for businesses that want to implement a proof of vaccination framework:
1. Safety – to be guided by businesses’ obligation to take all reasonable steps necessary to protect the health and safety of their place of business.
2. Science – to be consistent with the current science on Covid-19 and recommended public health best practices.
3. Accommodation – to provide human rights accommodation where applicable, up to the point of undue hardship.
4. Privacy – to use the least intrusive mechanism to verify vaccination status.
5. Transparency – to engage in dialogue with employees, customers and other business partners.
